01Biography

Tim Duncan biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Nicknamed "The Big Fundamental," Tim Duncan built a Hall of Fame career on quiet, technically flawless basketball rather than flash. Born April 25, 1976, in Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Height 6 ft 11 in (211 cm). He was a competitive swimmer as a teenager before Hurricane Hugo destroyed his practice pool in 1989, pushing him toward basketball instead.

He played college basketball at Wake Forest (1993–1997), winning national college player of the year in 1997. Drafted 1st overall by the San Antonio Spurs in 1997, he spent his entire 19-season career with the team, forming the "Twin Towers" frontcourt with David Robinson in his early years.

Duncan won five NBA championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014), three Finals MVP awards (1999, 2003, 2005), and two regular-season MVP awards (2002, 2003). A 15-time NBA All-Star, he holds the all-time record for All-NBA Team selections (15) and All-Defensive Team selections (15).

Career totals: 26,496 points (19.0 ppg), 15,091 rebounds (10.8 rpg), 3,020 blocks (2.2 bpg) over 1,392 games.

His No. 21 was retired by the San Antonio Spurs. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.
