01Biography

Charles Barkley biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Officially listed at 6-foot-6 but built like a man half a foot shorter, "The Round Mound of Rebound" dominated the paint through sheer force and timing rather than size. Charles Barkley was born February 20, 1963, in Leeds, Alabama.

He played college basketball at Auburn (1981–1984), earning SEC Player of the Year honors in 1984. Drafted 5th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1984, he went on to play for the Phoenix Suns (1992–1996) and Houston Rockets (1996–2000) over his 16-season career.

Barkley won the NBA MVP award in 1993, the year he led the Suns to the league's best record and an NBA Finals appearance against Michael Jordan's Bulls. An 11-time NBA All-Star, he made the All-NBA First Team five times, led the league in rebounding in 1987, and is regarded as one of the greatest rebounders relative to his size in NBA history — the shortest player ever to lead the league in that category.

Career totals: 23,757 points (22.1 ppg), 12,546 rebounds (11.7 rpg), 4,215 assists (3.9 apg). He is one of only a handful of players in NBA history to record at least 20,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, and 4,000 assists in a career.

He never won an NBA championship, a fact often cited alongside his standing as one of the greatest players never to do so. His No. 34 was retired by both the 76ers and the Suns. Named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
