01Biography

Pau Gasol biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

A trade that sent him from Memphis to the Lakers in 2008 is still debated as one of the most lopsided deals in NBA history — and it turned Pau Gasol into a two-time champion almost overnight. Born July 6, 1980, in Barcelona, Spain. Height 7 ft 0 in (213 cm).

He developed with FC Barcelona (1998–2001) before being drafted 3rd overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 2001 and immediately traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, where he won Rookie of the Year. The 2008 trade sent him to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he formed a dominant frontcourt partnership with Kobe Bryant, winning back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010. He later played for the Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs, and Milwaukee Bucks, closing his career back with FC Barcelona in 2021.

A six-time NBA All-Star, Gasol made the All-NBA Team four times combined and is the fourth player in NBA history to reach 20,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 3,500 assists, and 1,500 blocks in a career.

Career totals: 20,894 points (17.0 ppg), 11,305 rebounds (9.2 rpg), 3,925 assists (3.2 apg) over 1,226 games and 18 seasons.

His No. 16 was retired by the Lakers. He won two Olympic silver medals with Spain (2008, 2012). Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.
