01Biography

Russell Westbrook biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

No player in NBA history has recorded more triple-doubles than Russell Westbrook — he passed Oscar Robertson's record in 2021 and has kept adding to it ever since, reaching 208 for his career. Born November 12, 1988, in Long Beach, California. Height 6 ft 3 in (191 cm).

He played college basketball at UCLA before being drafted 4th overall by the Seattle SuperSonics in 2008, a franchise that relocated to Oklahoma City that same year. He spent 11 seasons anchoring the Thunder, leading them to the 2012 NBA Finals, before later playing for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, and Sacramento Kings.

Westbrook won the NBA MVP award in 2017 after becoming only the second player ever to average a triple-double for a full season — a feat he later repeated three more times. A nine-time All-Star, he won two NBA scoring titles (2015, 2017) and led the league in assists three times.

Career totals over 18 seasons and 1,301 games: 20.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game, with roughly 27,000 career points — he's one of only a handful of players to combine 25,000 points, 9,000 assists, and 8,000 rebounds.

Named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. He won an Olympic gold medal with Team USA in 2012.
