01Biography

Full biography of Oscar Robertson — NBA career timeline, legacy, and impact on basketball history.

Career story, milestones, and place among the all-time greats.

Nicknamed "The Big O," Oscar Robertson redefined what a point guard could be — a floor general who scored and rebounded like a forward. Born November 24, 1938, in Charlotte, Tennessee. Height 6 ft 5 in (196 cm).

He led Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis to two state championships, then starred at the University of Cincinnati (1957–1960), where he was a three-time consensus All-American and national college player of the year. Drafted by the Cincinnati Royals in 1960, he won Rookie of the Year after averaging 30.5 points per game as a rookie.

In the 1961–62 season, Robertson became the first player in NBA history to average a triple-double for an entire season — 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 11.4 assists per game, a feat not repeated until Russell Westbrook in 2016–17. He won the NBA MVP award in 1964, was a 12-time NBA All-Star, and made the All-NBA First Team nine consecutive seasons. Traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in 1970, he teamed with a young Lew Alcindor (later Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) to win the NBA championship in 1971.

Career totals: 26,710 points (25.7 ppg), 7,804 rebounds (7.5 rpg), 9,887 assists (9.5 apg) — an NBA record at the time of his retirement.

Named to the NBA's 35th, 50th, and 75th Anniversary Teams. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980.
