Nicknamed simply "Magic," Earvin Johnson Jr. is widely regarded as the greatest point guard in basketball history. Born August 14, 1959, in Lansing, Michigan. Height 6 ft 9 in (206 cm).
He played college basketball at Michigan State (1977–1979), winning the 1979 NCAA championship in a title-game matchup against Larry Bird that launched one of the sport's defining rivalries. Drafted 1st overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979, he spent his entire NBA career with the team (1979–1991, plus a brief return in 1996).
As a rookie, Johnson became the only player in NBA history to win Finals MVP in his first season, helping the Lakers win the 1980 championship. He went on to win five NBA titles in total (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988), three Finals MVP awards, and three regular-season MVP awards (1987, 1989, 1990). A 12-time NBA All-Star, he led the league in assists four times and remains the NBA's all-time leader in assists per game.

In 1991, Johnson retired after announcing he had tested HIV-positive. The following year, he won an Olympic gold medal as a member of the 1992 U.S. "Dream Team." He was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996 and to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.
