At Indiana University (1979–1981), Thomas led the Hoosiers to the 1981 NCAA championship as a 19-year-old sophomore, earning Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors before entering the NBA draft early. Drafted 2nd overall by the Detroit Pistons in 1981, he spent his entire career with the franchise, transforming a last-place team into back-to-back NBA champions.
The Pistons won the title in 1989 and again in 1990, with Thomas named Finals MVP the second time. Nicknamed "Zeke," he was a 12-time NBA All-Star, twice winning the All-Star Game MVP award, and made the All-NBA First Team three times. The "Bad Boys" Pistons he led were known for physical, defense-first basketball.
His No. 11 was retired by the Pistons. Named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000. He later coached the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks.
