01Biography

Rick Barry biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

He shot free throws underhand — "granny style" — and got mocked for it constantly, right up until his career 90.0% mark made him one of the most accurate shooters in basketball history. Born March 28, 1944, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Height 6 ft 7 in (201 cm).

He starred at Miami (Florida), leading the nation in scoring at 37.4 points per game as a senior. Drafted 2nd overall by the San Francisco Warriors in 1965, he won Rookie of the Year and an NBA scoring title (1967) before jumping to the ABA, where he played for the Oakland Oaks, Washington Caps, and New York Nets and won a championship in 1969.

Returning to the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 1972, Barry led the team to the 1975 championship, earning Finals MVP after averaging 30.6 points in the series. He is the only player to ever lead both the NBA (1967) and ABA (1969) in scoring. An eight-time NBA All-Star (plus four ABA All-Star selections), he made the All-NBA First Team five times.

Combined ABA and NBA career totals: 25,279 points (24.8 ppg), 6,863 rebounds (6.7 rpg), 4,952 assists (4.9 apg) over 1,020 games.

His No. 24 was retired by the Golden State Warriors. Named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams and the ABA All-Time Team. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987.
