Born December 7, 1956, in West Baden, Indiana. Height 6 ft 9 in (206 cm). Nicknamed "The Hick from French Lick" and "Larry Legend," Bird is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

He played college basketball at Indiana State (1976–1979). Drafted 6th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 1978 NBA Draft, he spent his entire 13-season career (1979–1992) with Boston.

Bird was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 1980 and won three consecutive NBA MVP awards (1984–1986). He led the Celtics to three NBA championships (1981, 1984, 1986) and won two Finals MVP awards. A 12-time NBA All-Star, he was also part of the 1992 U.S. Olympic "Dream Team" that won gold.

Career totals: 21,791 points (24.3 ppg), 8,974 rebounds (10.0 rpg), 5,695 assists (6.3 apg).

Known for his shooting touch, court vision, and competitiveness. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998. After retiring, he coached the Indiana Pacers (1997–2000) and later served as the team's president of basketball operations.
