Jerry West — Bio
Born May 28, 1938, in Chelyan, West Virginia. Died June 12, 2024, in Los Angeles, aged 86. Height 6 ft 3 in (191 cm). Nicknamed "Mr. Clutch" and "The Logo" — his silhouette is the basis for the NBA logo.
He played college basketball at West Virginia (1957–1960), leading the Mountaineers to the 1959 NCAA championship game and earning Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors despite the loss.
Drafted 2nd overall by the Minneapolis Lakers (who relocated to Los Angeles that year) in the 1960 NBA Draft. He played his entire 14-season career (1960–1974) with the Lakers. A 14-time NBA All-Star, 10-time All-NBA First Team selection, and 4-time All-Defensive First Team member, he won his only playing championship in 1972 and was named 1969 NBA Finals MVP despite his team losing that series — the only player in NBA history to receive the award on the losing side.
Career totals: 25,192 points (27.0 ppg), 6,238 assists (6.7 apg), 5,366 rebounds (5.8 rpg).
After retiring as a player, West coached the Lakers (1976–1979) before becoming a highly successful front-office executive, winning eight NBA championships as a Lakers and Golden State Warriors executive/consultant (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988, 2000, 2015, 2017), and twice being named NBA Executive of the Year (1995, 2004).
Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame three times: as a player (1979), as a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic team (2010), and as a contributor (2024). His No. 44 was retired by the Lakers in 1983. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.
