01Biography

Julius Erving biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Nicknamed "Dr. J," Julius Erving turned the slam dunk into an art form and helped legitimize an entire league along the way. Born February 22, 1950, in East Meadow, New York. Height 6 ft 7 in (201 cm).

He played two seasons at the University of Massachusetts (1969–1971), averaging 26.3 points and 20.2 rebounds per game — one of only five players ever to average more than 20 and 20 for a college career. He turned pro early, joining the ABA's Virginia Squires in 1971, then the New York Nets, where he won back-to-back ABA championships (1974, 1976) and three ABA MVP awards. When the ABA merged into the NBA after the 1975–76 season, his contract was sold to the Philadelphia 76ers, where he played the rest of his career (1976–1987).

Erving led the 76ers to four NBA Finals appearances and the franchise's 1983 championship. He won the NBA MVP award in 1981 and was an 11-time NBA All-Star, twice named All-Star Game MVP (1977, 1983). He retired in 1987 as just the third professional player to score 30,000 combined career points.

Combined ABA and NBA career totals: 1,243 games played, averaging 24.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.

Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. Later served in the Orlando Magic front office (1997–2003).
