Born August 23, 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Died January 26, 2020, in Calabasas, California, aged 41. Height 6 ft 6 in (198 cm). Known as "Black Mamba," Bryant is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
He entered the NBA directly out of Lower Merion High School, drafted 13th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the 1996 NBA Draft and immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he spent his entire 20-year career (1996–2016).
Bryant won five NBA championships — three straight with Shaquille O'Neal (2000–2002) and two more (2009, 2010), earning Finals MVP both times. He was named NBA MVP in 2008. An 18-time NBA All-Star (third most all-time), he won four All-Star Game MVP awards, was named to the All-NBA Team 15 times (11 First Team), and the All-Defensive Team 12 times (9 First Team). He won two scoring titles (2006, 2007) and scored a career-high 81 points against Toronto in 2006, the second-most in NBA history.
Career totals: 33,643 points (25.0 ppg), 7,047 rebounds (5.2 rpg), 6,306 assists (4.7 ppg) — he ranks fourth all-time in NBA scoring.
Won Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012. Both his jersey numbers, 8 and 24, were retired by the Lakers in 2017 — the only NBA player honored with two numbers by one franchise. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020, and named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021. In 2018, he won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for Dear Basketball.
Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, along with seven others, on January 26, 2020.
