01Biography

Dirk Nowitzki biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

A one-legged fadeaway jumper made him nearly unguardable — and Dirk Nowitzki used it to become the highest-scoring international player in NBA history. Born June 19, 1978, in Würzburg, West Germany. Height 7 ft 0 in (213 cm).

He developed with DJK Würzburg in Germany before being drafted 9th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1998 and immediately traded to the Dallas Mavericks, where he spent his entire 21-season career (1998–2019) — an NBA record for seasons with a single franchise.

Nowitzki won the NBA MVP award in 2007 and led the Mavericks to their first NBA championship in 2011, earning Finals MVP. A 14-time NBA All-Star, he made the All-NBA Team 12 times (4 First Team) and won the NBA Three-Point Contest in 2006. In November 2014, he surpassed Hakeem Olajuwon as the highest-scoring foreign-born player in NBA history, and in March 2017 became the seventh player to reach 30,000 career points.

Career totals: 31,560 points (20.7 ppg), 11,489 rebounds (7.5 rpg), 3,651 assists (2.4 apg).

His No. 41 was retired by the Mavericks. Named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021 and inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.
