Derek Carr biography and NFL career overview.
Derek Dallas Carr is a former quarterback born March 28, 1991, in Fresno, California (6'3", 215 lbs). He played college football at Fresno State, where his brother David also starred, and was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He's a four-time Pro Bowler who later played two seasons for the New Orleans Saints before retiring in 2025.
Carr started as a rookie and quickly became the face of the Raiders' rebuild, leading the team to its first playoff appearance since 2002 during the 2016 season. He earned three straight Pro Bowl nods from 2015 to 2017 and, in 2017, signed what was then the NFL's richest contract by average annual value.
Carr left Oakland/Las Vegas in 2022 as the franchise's all-time leader in passing yards, touchdowns, and completions, after leading the Raiders to another playoff berth in 2021. He signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2023, making a fourth Pro Bowl that year.
Injuries — including a fractured hand, a concussion, and recurring shoulder problems — increasingly limited Carr over his final two seasons in New Orleans. In May 2025, he announced his retirement, citing a severe labral tear and degenerative damage to his throwing shoulder that made surgery unlikely to restore his previous level of play.
Carr finished his career with over 41,000 passing yards and 257 touchdowns, ranking among the most productive quarterbacks of his generation despite never advancing past the Wild Card round.
