01Biography

Geno Smith biography and NFL career overview.

Eugene Cyril "Geno" Smith III is a quarterback for the New York Jets, born October 10, 1990, in Miramar, Florida (6'2", 219 lbs). He played college football at West Virginia and was drafted by the Jets in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, later playing for the Giants, Chargers, Seahawks, and Raiders before returning to New York. He's the 2022 NFL Comeback Player of the Year and two-time Pro Bowler.

Smith struggled as a young starter with the Jets, including a locker room altercation in 2015 in which a teammate broke his jaw over a financial dispute, and spent the next several years as a journeyman backup with four different teams. He resurfaced with Seattle in 2019 as a backup to Russell Wilson before finally winning the starting job in 2022 after Wilson's departure.

That 2022 season became one of the great late-career breakouts in the league: Smith led the NFL in completion percentage, threw for a career-high 4,282 yards, and led Seattle to a surprise playoff berth, earning Comeback Player of the Year and his first Pro Bowl. He backed it up with another Pro Bowl season in 2023 and set new career and franchise passing records in 2024.

Smith was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025, but the move reunited him only briefly with coach Pete Carroll before a rough season — including a league-high 17 interceptions — led to his release. He was traded back to the Jets, the team that drafted him, in March 2026.
