01Biography

Vince Carter biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

"Air Canada" played in four different decades — the only player in NBA history to do so — retiring in 2020 at age 43, 22 years after his rookie season. Born January 26, 1977, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Height 6 ft 6 in (198 cm).

He starred at North Carolina (1995–1998), reaching two Final Fours, before being drafted 5th overall by the Golden State Warriors in 1998 and immediately traded to the Toronto Raptors. He won the Slam Dunk Contest and an Olympic gold medal in 2000, famously dunking over 7-foot-2 French center Frédéric Weis in a play French media dubbed "le dunk de la mort." After six seasons in Toronto, he went on to play for the New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, and Atlanta Hawks.

An eight-time All-Star, Carter won NBA Rookie of the Year in 1999 and later received the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award (2016) and NBA Sportsmanship Award (2020) in recognition of his longevity and veteran leadership.

Career totals: 25,728 points (16.7 ppg), 6,606 rebounds (4.3 rpg), 4,714 assists (3.1 apg) over 1,541 games — the most games ever played by a non-center in NBA history.

His No. 15 was retired by both the Raptors and the Nets. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2024.
