Ten championship rings — second only to teammate Bill Russell's eleven — make Sam Jones one of the most decorated winners in the history of American team sports, yet his game-saving shots earned him the more personal nickname "Mr. Clutch." Born June 24, 1933, in Laurinburg, North Carolina. Died December 30, 2021, in Boca Raton, Florida, at age 88. Height 6 ft 4 in (193 cm).
He played at North Carolina Central (1951–1954, 1956–1957) under Hall of Fame coach John McLendon. Drafted 8th overall by the Boston Celtics in 1957, he spent his entire 12-season career with the franchise, part of a dynasty that won eight consecutive championships from 1959 to 1966.
Jones won 10 NBA championships in total, was a five-time NBA All-Star, and made the All-NBA Second Team three times, known for a soft bank shot and knack for hitting decisive shots late in playoff games.
Career totals: 15,411 points (17.7 ppg), 4,305 rebounds (4.9 rpg), 2,209 assists (2.5 apg) over 871 games.
