Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.
Born February 7, 1974, in Johannesburg, South Africa, and raised in British Columbia, Nash became one of only a handful of Canadians to reach NBA stardom — and one of the smallest players ever to win back-to-back MVP awards.
He played college basketball at Santa Clara (1992–1996) before being drafted 15th overall by the Phoenix Suns in 1996. After a stint with the Dallas Mavericks (1998–2004), he returned to Phoenix (2004–2012) and became the offensive engine of Mike D'Antoni's high-tempo "Seven Seconds or Less" teams, winning back-to-back NBA MVP awards in 2005 and 2006. He closed his 18-season career with the Los Angeles Lakers (2012–2015).
An eight-time NBA All-Star, Nash led the league in assists five times and finished with career totals of 17,387 points (14.3 ppg), 10,335 assists (8.5 apg), and 3,642 rebounds (3.0 rpg). He never reached an NBA Finals.
His No. 13 was retired by the Suns. Named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021 and inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018. He later coached the Brooklyn Nets (2020–2022).
