01Biography

John Stockton biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Fifteen teams passed on him before the Utah Jazz took a chance at 16th overall in 1984 — and John Stockton went on to retire as the most prolific passer in NBA history. Height 6 ft 1 in (185 cm), born March 26, 1962, in Spokane, Washington.

Career totals: 19,711 points (13.1 ppg), 15,806 assists (10.5 apg), 3,265 steals (2.2 spg) — both his assists and steals totals remain NBA all-time records, with no active or retired player within reach of either. He led the league in assists nine consecutive seasons (1988–1996) and in steals twice.

A Gonzaga product (1980–1984), Stockton spent his entire 19-season career (1984–2003) with the Jazz, never missing the playoffs. Paired with Karl Malone in the league's signature pick-and-roll partnership, he reached two NBA Finals (1997, 1998) but never won a championship. A 10-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA First Team selection, he won Olympic gold with Team USA in 1992 and 1996.

His No. 12 was retired by the Jazz. Named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams, and inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.
