His backstory started at two junior colleges rather than a major program, and he needed until the second round of the draft to hear his name called — yet Nick Van Exel became one of the sparkplugs of a young, exciting mid-1990s Lakers team. Born November 27, 1971, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Height 6 ft 1 in (185 cm).

After Trinity Valley Community College, he played at Cincinnati (1991–1993). Drafted 37th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1993, he spent five seasons there before later playing for the Denver Nuggets, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers, and San Antonio Spurs.

Nicknamed "Nick the Quick," Van Exel made his only NBA All-Star team in 1998 with the Lakers, known for deep three-point range and clutch shot-making.

Career totals: 12,658 points (14.4 ppg), 5,777 assists (6.6 apg), 2,545 rebounds (2.9 rpg) over 880 games and 13 seasons.

He went on to a long career as an NBA and G League assistant and head coach.
