01Biography

Tiny Archibald biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

At just 6-foot-1 and 150 pounds soaking wet, "Tiny" Archibald did something no player before or since has managed — leading the entire NBA in both scoring and assists in the same season. Born September 2, 1948, in New York City. Height 6 ft 1 in (185 cm).

He played at UTEP (1967–1970), then was drafted 19th overall by the Cincinnati Royals in 1970. In 1972–73, with the renamed Kansas City-Omaha Kings, he averaged 34.0 points and 11.4 assists per game — a statistical feat still unmatched. Traded to the New York Nets and later the Boston Celtics (1978–1983), he won his only NBA championship with Boston in 1981, also earning that year's All-Star Game MVP.

A six-time All-Star, Archibald made the All-NBA First Team three times despite his slight frame, using blinding speed and craft to score and set up teammates against far bigger defenders.

Career totals: 16,481 points (18.8 ppg), 6,476 assists (7.4 apg), 2,046 rebounds (2.3 rpg) over 876 games and 13 seasons.

His No. 1 was retired by the Sacramento Kings (the Royals/Kings franchise). Named to the NBA 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991.
