A basketball star who became a big-city mayor — Dave Bing's post-playing career took him from the Detroit Pistons backcourt to the steel business and, eventually, Detroit's city hall. Born November 24, 1943, in Washington, D.C. Height 6 ft 3 in (191 cm).
He starred at Syracuse (1963–1966), the school's first consensus All-American in 39 years. Drafted 2nd overall by the Detroit Pistons in 1966, he won Rookie of the Year and led the NBA in scoring in 1968, despite playing through a serious eye injury suffered before the 1971–72 season that threatened to end his career. He later played for the Washington Bullets and Boston Celtics.
A seven-time NBA All-Star, Bing won the 1976 All-Star Game MVP and made the All-NBA First Team twice.
Career totals: 18,327 points (20.3 ppg), 5,397 assists (6.0 apg), 3,420 rebounds (3.8 rpg) over his 12-season career.
His No. 21 was retired by the Detroit Pistons. Named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1990. He later served as the 74th mayor of Detroit (2009–2014).
