01Biography

Lenny Wilkens biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Few figures have shaped the NBA on both sides of the ball the way Lenny Wilkens did — a nine-time All-Star as a player, and for years the league's all-time wins leader as a coach. Born October 28, 1937, in New York City. Died November 9, 2025, in Medina, Washington, at age 88. Height 6 ft 1 in (185 cm).

He starred at Providence (1957–1960). Drafted 6th overall by the St. Louis Hawks in 1960, he later played for the Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Portland Trail Blazers, often serving as player-coach in his final seasons.

Wilkens led the league in assists in 1970 and won the 1971 All-Star Game MVP. He retired second all-time in career assists. After his playing days, he coached six different franchises over more than three decades, winning an NBA championship with the SuperSonics in 1979 and the Coach of the Year award in 1994.

Career playing totals: 17,772 points (16.5 ppg), 7,211 assists (6.7 apg), 5,030 rebounds (4.7 rpg) over 1,077 games.

His No. 19 was retired by the Seattle SuperSonics. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame three times — as a player (1989), a coach (1998), and with the 1992 "Dream Team" coaching staff.
