The "finger roll" became George Gervin's signature — a soft, arcing shot released with such calm that it earned him the nickname "The Iceman." Born April 27, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan. Height 6 ft 7 in (201 cm).
He played college ball at Eastern Michigan before turning pro with the ABA's Virginia Squires in 1972, teaming briefly with Julius Erving. After the ABA-NBA merger, he became the face of the San Antonio Spurs (1974–1985), later closing his career with a season for the Chicago Bulls (1985–1986) alongside a young Michael Jordan.
Gervin won four NBA scoring titles (1978, 1979, 1980, 1982), including a legendary 63-point outburst in 1978 to clinch the crown on the final day of the season. A nine-time NBA All-Star (plus three ABA All-Star selections), he won the 1980 All-Star Game MVP and made the All-NBA First Team five times.
Combined ABA and NBA career totals: 26,595 points (25.1 ppg), 5,602 rebounds (5.3 rpg), 2,798 assists (2.6 apg).
His No. 44 was retired by the Spurs. Named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.
