His college scoring record has survived more than half a century — 3,667 points in three varsity seasons at LSU, without a three-point line, without a shot clock working in his favor, and while freshmen still couldn't play varsity at all. Born June 22, 1947, in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. Died January 5, 1988, in Pasadena, California, at age 40. Height 6 ft 5 in (196 cm).
Coached by his father Press at LSU (1967–1970), "Pistol Pete" averaged 44.2 points per game across his college career and led the nation in scoring three straight years. Drafted 3rd overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 1970, he later played for the New Orleans/Utah Jazz and finished his career with the Boston Celtics.
A five-time NBA All-Star, Maravich won the league scoring title in 1977 at 31.1 points per game and made the All-NBA First Team twice. Known for flashy, playground-inspired passing years before it became common, he never won an NBA championship.
Career totals: 15,948 points (24.2 ppg), 3,563 assists (5.4 apg), 2,747 rebounds (4.2 rpg) over his 10-season career.
His No. 44 was retired by the Atlanta Hawks and his No. 7 by both the Utah Jazz and New Orleans Pelicans. Named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987, a year before his sudden death from a heart defect at age 40.
