01Biography

Allen Iverson biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Standing just 6 feet tall in a league of giants, Allen Iverson became one of the most electric — and most influential — scorers the NBA has ever seen. Born June 7, 1975, in Hampton, Virginia.

He played two seasons at Georgetown (1994–1996), setting the school's career scoring average record (22.9 ppg) and winning Big East Defensive Player of the Year both years. Drafted 1st overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996, he was named Rookie of the Year and led the franchise for a decade before finishing his 14-season career with stints for the Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, Memphis Grizzlies, and back with Philadelphia.

Iverson won the NBA MVP award in 2001, the same year he led the 76ers to the NBA Finals. A four-time NBA scoring champion (1999, 2001, 2002, 2005) and 11-time All-Star, he twice won All-Star Game MVP (2001, 2005) and led the league in steals three times. He won a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2004 Olympics.

Career totals: averaged 26.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 2.2 steals per game over 914 games — his regular-season scoring average ranks seventh all-time, and his playoff scoring average of 29.7 points per game trails only Michael Jordan and Luka Dončić.

His No. 3 was retired by the 76ers in 2014. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.
