01Biography

Full biography of Shaquille O'neal — NBA career timeline, legacy, and impact on basketball history.

Career story, milestones, and place among the all-time greats.

Nicknamed "The Diesel" and "Shaq," few players have ever combined size and dominance the way this 7-foot-1, 325-pound center did. Born March 6, 1972, in Newark, New Jersey.

He played college basketball at LSU (1989–1992). Drafted 1st overall by the Orlando Magic in the 1992 NBA Draft, he was named Rookie of the Year and led Orlando to the 1995 NBA Finals. Over his 19-season career, he also played for the Los Angeles Lakers (1996–2004), Miami Heat (2004–2008), Phoenix Suns (2008–2009), Cleveland Cavaliers (2009–2010), and Boston Celtics (2010–2011).

O'Neal won the NBA MVP award in 2000 and four NBA championships — three straight with the Lakers alongside Kobe Bryant (2000, 2001, 2002) and one with the Miami Heat alongside Dwyane Wade (2006) — earning Finals MVP all three times with the Lakers.

Career totals: 28,596 points (23.7 ppg), 13,099 rebounds (10.9 rpg), 2,732 blocks (2.3 bpg).

His number has been retired by three franchises — No. 34 by the Lakers, No. 32 by both the Heat and the Magic. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.
