Career story, milestones, and place among the all-time greats.
A soccer- and handball-trained athlete from Lagos who didn't pick up a basketball until 15 — and went on to redefine footwork at the center position. Hakeem Olajuwon was born January 21, 1963, in Lagos, Nigeria. Height 7 ft 0 in (213 cm).
He played college basketball at the University of Houston (1981–1984) as part of the "Phi Slamma Jamma" teams alongside Clyde Drexler, reaching three consecutive Final Fours and earning Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors in 1983. Drafted 1st overall by the Houston Rockets in the star-studded 1984 NBA Draft (ahead of Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley), he played 17 seasons in Houston before finishing his career with the Toronto Raptors (2001–2002).
Olajuwon led the Rockets to back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995, winning Finals MVP both years. He was named NBA MVP in 1994 and Defensive Player of the Year twice (1993, 1994) — the only player to win MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and a championship in the same season. A 12-time NBA All-Star, he is the only player in NBA history to record more than 3,000 blocks and 2,000 steals in a career.
Career totals: 26,946 points (21.8 ppg), 13,747 rebounds (11.1 rpg), 3,830 blocks (3.1 bpg) over 1,238 games — his blocks total remains the NBA all-time record.
Known for his "Dream Shake" footwork move. Won an Olympic gold medal with Team USA in 1996 (having become a U.S. citizen in 1993). Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
