Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.
Before he was "The Admiral," David Robinson was a U.S. Naval Academy midshipman who grew four inches past the academy's height restrictions and had to serve two years of active duty before he could play a single NBA game. Born August 6, 1965, in Key West, Florida.
At Navy (1983–1987), he set NCAA records for career blocked shots and became the first Division I player to reach 2,600 points and 1,300 rebounds while shooting 60% from the field. Drafted 1st overall by the San Antonio Spurs in 1987, he didn't make his NBA debut until 1989 after completing his Navy service — then immediately won Rookie of the Year.
Over his 14-season career, entirely with San Antonio, Robinson won the NBA MVP award (1995), a scoring title (1994, capped by a 71-point game), and the Defensive Player of the Year award (1992). A 10-time All-Star, he won two NBA championships (1999, 2003), the second in his final season, playing alongside a young Tim Duncan.
Career averages: 21.1 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game, with 20,790 total career points. He won Olympic gold medals in 1992 and 1996. Named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams, and inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.
