Nicknamed "The A-Train," Artis Gilmore combined dominant size with a shooting touch precise enough to make him the NBA's most accurate field-goal shooter of all time. Born September 21, 1949, in Chipley, Florida. Height 7 ft 2 in (218 cm).
He led Jacksonville to the 1970 NCAA championship game, becoming one of only five college players ever to average at least 20 points and 20 rebounds for a career; his 22.7 rebounds per game remains an NCAA Division I record. Drafted 1st overall in the 1971 ABA draft by the Kentucky Colonels, he won the ABA's Rookie of the Year and MVP awards that same season, later leading the Colonels to the 1975 ABA championship. When the ABA folded, he joined the Chicago Bulls, later playing for the San Antonio Spurs and finishing his career with brief stints for the Bulls and Boston Celtics.
An 11-time all-star across both leagues (6 NBA, 5 ABA), Gilmore led the NBA in field-goal percentage four consecutive seasons and once played 670 consecutive games.
Combined ABA and NBA career totals: 24,941 points (18.8 ppg), 16,330 rebounds (12.3 rpg), 3,178 blocks (2.4 bpg) over 1,329 games.
Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011, having waited years despite career numbers that rank among the era's best.
