01Biography

Patrick Ewing biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Few centers dominated as long as Patrick Ewing without ever winning a title — 17 NBA seasons, 11 All-Star selections, and not a single championship ring. Born August 5, 1962, in Kingston, Jamaica; he moved to the U.S. at age 11 and grew to 7 feet (213 cm).

At Georgetown (1981–1985), under coach John Thompson, he led the Hoyas to three national championship game appearances and the 1984 NCAA title, earning Final Four Most Outstanding Player and national college player of the year honors. Drafted 1st overall by the New York Knicks in 1985, he was named Rookie of the Year and spent 15 seasons anchoring the franchise, including a run to the 1994 NBA Finals.

Career totals: 24,815 points (21.0 ppg), 11,607 rebounds (9.8 rpg), over 1,183 games — he retains most major Knicks franchise scoring and rebounding records. He won Olympic gold with Team USA in 1984 and 1992 (as a member of the original "Dream Team"). He finished his playing career with brief stints for the Seattle SuperSonics (2000–2001) and Orlando Magic (2001–2002).

Named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
