01Biography

Marcus Camby biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

He was supposed to be a scorer at UMass — instead, Marcus Camby carved out a 17-year NBA career almost entirely on defense, culminating in a Defensive Player of the Year award built on shot-blocking that few big men have matched. Born March 22, 1974, in Hartford, Connecticut. Height 6 ft 11 in (211 cm).

He led UMass to the 1996 Final Four, winning national college player of the year. Drafted 2nd overall by the Toronto Raptors in 1996, he later played for the New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, and a return stint with the Knicks.

Camby won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 2007, leading the league in blocks that season. A four-time NBA blocks leader overall, he made the All-Defensive First Team twice and Second Team twice, and recorded a rare 20-point, 20-rebound, 6-assist, 6-block game in 2008.

Career totals: 9,262 points (9.5 ppg), 9,513 rebounds (9.8 rpg), 2,331 blocks (2.4 bpg) over his career.

His No. 21 was retired by UMass.
