01Biography

Ben Wallace biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Undrafted out of a Division II program, Ben Wallace went on to become — by wide consensus — the greatest undrafted player in NBA history, built entirely on defense and rebounding rather than a single point of offensive polish. Born September 10, 1974, in White Hall, Alabama. Height 6 ft 9 in (206 cm).

He played at Virginia Union (1994–1996) after starting at a community college. Going unselected in the 1996 NBA draft, he signed with the Washington Bullets/Wizards, later playing for the Orlando Magic before a breakout run with the Detroit Pistons (2000–2006), where he anchored the 2004 NBA championship team.

Nicknamed "Big Ben," Wallace won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award a record-tying four times (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) and made the All-Defensive First Team five times. A four-time All-Star, he led the league in rebounding twice and blocks once, despite never developing much of a scoring game.

Career totals: 6,254 points (5.7 ppg), 10,482 rebounds (9.6 rpg), 2,137 blocks (2.0 bpg) over 1,088 games and 16 seasons.

His No. 3 was retired by the Pistons. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
