01Biography

Elvin Hayes biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Rookie scoring titles are exceedingly rare — Elvin Hayes and Wilt Chamberlain are the only two players in NBA history to lead the league in scoring in their first season. Born November 17, 1945, in Rayville, Louisiana. Height 6 ft 9 in (206 cm).

At the University of Houston (1965–1968), he faced Lew Alcindor's UCLA in the famous 1968 "Game of the Century" at the Astrodome, scoring 39 points to end UCLA's 47-game winning streak. Drafted 1st overall by the San Diego Rockets in 1968, he later played for the Baltimore/Capital/Washington Bullets and finished his career back with the Houston Rockets.

Nicknamed "The Big E," Hayes was a 12-time NBA All-Star and won the NBA championship with the Bullets in 1978. He led the league in scoring as a rookie and in rebounding twice.

Career totals: 27,313 points (21.0 ppg), 16,279 rebounds (12.5 rpg), 1,771 blocks (2.0 bpg) over 1,303 games and 16 seasons — remarkably durable, he missed only 9 games in his entire career.

His No. 11 was retired by the Washington Wizards and No. 44 by the Houston Rockets. Named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1990.
