01Biography

Nate Thurmond biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

His NBA debut with a new team produced the first quadruple-double in league history — 22 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists, and 12 blocks — a stat line that still stuns more than 50 years later. Born July 25, 1941, in Akron, Ohio. Died July 16, 2016, in San Francisco, California, at age 74. Height 6 ft 11 in (211 cm).

He starred at Bowling Green (1960–1963), leading the Mid-American Conference in rebounding all three varsity seasons. Drafted 3rd overall by the San Francisco Warriors in 1963, he spent 11 seasons with the franchise as it moved and became the Golden State Warriors, later playing for the Chicago Bulls and finishing his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

A seven-time NBA All-Star, Thurmond made the All-Defensive First or Second Team five times, regularly guarding both Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He is one of only five players in NBA history to average at least 15 rebounds per game for a career.

Career totals: 14,437 points (15.0 ppg) and 14,464 rebounds (15.0 rpg) over 964 games and 14 seasons — a nearly identical scoring and rebounding total.

His No. 42 was retired by both the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers. Named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985.
