01Biography

Bernard King biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

A devastating knee injury in 1985 threatened to end his career at its absolute peak, right after he'd led the league in scoring — Bernard King's two-year rehabilitation to return to All-Star form remains one of the sport's great comeback stories. Born December 4, 1956, in Brooklyn, New York. Height 6 ft 7 in (201 cm).

He starred at Tennessee (1974–1977) as part of the celebrated "Ernie and Bernie Show" alongside Ernie Grunfeld. Drafted 7th overall by the New Jersey Nets in 1977, he later played for the Utah Jazz, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Washington Bullets.

King won the NBA scoring title in 1985 with 32.9 points per game, ahead of Larry Bird and Michael Jordan that season, and once scored 60 points in a single game against New Jersey in 1984. A four-time NBA All-Star, he made the All-NBA First Team twice and won the inaugural NBA Comeback Player of the Year award in 1981.

Career totals: 19,655 points (22.5 ppg), 5,060 rebounds (5.8 rpg), 2,863 assists (3.3 apg) over 874 games and 14 seasons.

Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
