A kidney transplant from his own cousin, a year away from the game, and then a return to win an NBA championship — Alonzo Mourning's story is as much about resilience as it is about shot-blocking dominance. Born February 8, 1970, in Chesapeake, Virginia. Height 6 ft 10 in (208 cm).
He starred at Georgetown (1988–1992), winning Big East Player of the Year and setting the NCAA blocks record as a sophomore. Drafted 2nd overall by the Charlotte Hornets in 1992, he later played for the Miami Heat across two separate stints and had a brief run with the New Jersey Nets in between.
Mourning won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award twice (1999, 2000) and made the All-NBA First Team in 1999. A seven-time NBA All-Star, he was diagnosed with a serious kidney disease in 2000, missed most of two seasons, and received a transplant in 2003 before returning to help the Heat win the 2006 NBA championship.
Career totals: 14,311 points (17.1 ppg), 7,137 rebounds (8.5 rpg), 2,356 blocks (2.8 bpg) over 838 games and 15 seasons.
His No. 33 was retired by the Miami Heat. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.
