01Biography

Alex English biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Underused by two teams to start his career, Alex English didn't become a star until his mid-20s — and then he simply never stopped scoring, retiring as the NBA's seventh all-time leading scorer. Born January 5, 1954, in Columbia, South Carolina. Height 6 ft 8 in (203 cm).

He starred at South Carolina (1972–1976). Drafted 23rd overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1976, he played briefly for the Indiana Pacers before a mid-season 1979–80 trade to the Denver Nuggets, where he spent a decade as the centerpiece of some of the league's highest-scoring offenses.

Nicknamed "The Blade" for a smooth, efficient scoring style, English won the NBA scoring title in 1983 and averaged more than 23 points per game for nine consecutive seasons. An eight-time NBA All-Star, he made the All-NBA Second Team three times and helped lead Denver to nine straight playoff appearances.

Career totals: 25,613 points (21.5 ppg), 6,538 rebounds (5.5 rpg), 4,351 assists (3.6 apg) over 1,193 games and 15 seasons.

His No. 2 was retired by the Denver Nuggets. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997.
