Best known outside basketball circles for a 2004 brawl that spilled into the stands, Metta Sandiford-Artest — known for most of his career as Ron Artest — was also one of the most feared perimeter defenders the league has produced. Born November 13, 1979, in Queens, New York. Height 6 ft 7 in (201 cm).
He played at St. John's (1997–1999). Drafted 16th overall by the Chicago Bulls in 1999, he later played for the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and Los Angeles Lakers, where he hit a decisive shot in Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals to help clinch the championship. He closed his career with the New York Knicks and a return to the Lakers.
He won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 2004, the same season he made his only All-Star team and the All-NBA Third Team. A two-time All-Defensive First Team member, he legally changed his name to Metta World Peace in 2011 and later to Metta Sandiford-Artest in 2020.
Career totals: 13,058 points (13.2 ppg), 4,448 rebounds (4.5 rpg), 2,631 assists (2.7 apg) over his 17-season career.
He remains an outspoken advocate for mental health awareness, having auctioned his championship ring to support the cause.
