01Biography

Richard Hamilton biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

The clear plastic mask he wore after breaking his nose became as recognizable as his game — a relentless mid-range scorer who rarely stopped moving without the ball. Born February 14, 1978, in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Height 6 ft 7 in (201 cm).

He led UConn to the 1999 NCAA championship, earning Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors. Drafted 7th overall by the Washington Wizards in 1999, he was traded to the Detroit Pistons in 2002, where he spent nine seasons as the franchise's leading scorer, helping lead the team to six straight Eastern Conference Finals appearances and the 2004 NBA championship.

Nicknamed "Rip," Hamilton was a three-time NBA All-Star (2006–2008). He finished his career with a stint for the Chicago Bulls.

Career totals: 15,708 points (17.1 ppg), 3,125 assists (3.4 apg), 2,852 rebounds (3.2 rpg) over 921 games and 14 seasons — he became the Pistons' all-time leading scorer during his tenure there.

His No. 32 was retired by the Detroit Pistons in 2017.
