01Biography

Paul Arizin biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Cut from his high school team as a senior, "Pitchin' Paul" Arizin went on to help pioneer the one-handed jump shot at a time when most of the league still relied on two-handed set shots. Born April 9, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Died December 12, 2006, in Springfield Township, Pennsylvania, at age 78. Height 6 ft 4 in (193 cm).

He starred at Villanova (1947–1950), winning national college player of the year in 1950. Selected by the Philadelphia Warriors as a territorial pick that year, he played his entire NBA career with the franchise, taking a two-year break in the middle to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Arizin led the NBA in scoring twice (1952, 1957) and won the NBA championship in 1956. A 10-time NBA All-Star, he won the 1952 All-Star Game MVP and made the All-NBA First Team three times.

Career totals: 16,266 points (22.8 ppg), 6,129 rebounds (8.6 rpg), 1,665 assists (2.3 apg) over 713 games.

Named to the NBA's 25th, 50th, and 75th Anniversary Teams. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978.
