01Biography

Jerry Lucas biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

High school, college, Olympic, and professional championships — Jerry Lucas is the first basketball player ever to win a title at every one of those levels. Born March 30, 1940, in Middletown, Ohio. Height 6 ft 8 in (203 cm).

He led Middletown High School to 76 consecutive wins and two state titles before winning the 1960 NCAA championship at Ohio State, earning back-to-back Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors and a national college player of the year award twice. He also won Olympic gold with Team USA in 1960.

Selected by the Cincinnati Royals as a territorial pick in 1962, he won Rookie of the Year and spent seven seasons there alongside Oscar Robertson, later playing for the San Francisco Warriors and New York Knicks, where an injury to Willis Reed opened a starting role that helped Lucas finally win an NBA championship in 1973.

A seven-time NBA All-Star, Lucas made the All-NBA First Team three times, regarded as one of the greatest rebounders in NBA history relative to his size.
