01Biography

Dolph Schayes biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Sixteen seasons with a single franchise through relocation, and a body that transitioned from the two-handed set shot era straight into the jump-shooting modern game — Dolph Schayes was basketball's bridge between eras. Born May 19, 1928, in the Bronx, New York. Died December 10, 2015, in Syracuse, New York, at age 87. Height 6 ft 8 in (203 cm).

He starred at NYU (1944–1948). Selected as a territorial pick by the Syracuse Nationals in 1948, he played his entire career with the franchise as it moved to Philadelphia and became the 76ers in 1963.

Schayes led the Nationals to the franchise's only championship in 1955. A 12-time NBA All-Star, he made the All-NBA First Team six times and Second Team six more, and led the league in rebounding in 1951. He retired as the NBA's all-time leading scorer.

Career totals: 19,249 points (18.2 ppg) across the NBL, BAA, and NBA, 11,256 rebounds (12.1 rpg), and 3,072 assists (3.1 apg) over his 16-season career.

His No. 4 was retired by the Philadelphia 76ers. Named to the NBA's 25th, 50th, and 75th Anniversary Teams. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1972, and later named NBA Coach of the Year in 1966.
