Aaron Donald biography and NFL career overview.
Aaron Charles Donald is a former defensive tackle born May 23, 1991, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (6'1", 280 lbs). He spent his entire career (2014–2023) with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams after being drafted 13th overall in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Pittsburgh. He's a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, eight-time first-team All-Pro, ten-time Pro Bowler, and Super Bowl LVI champion.
Donald grew up in Pittsburgh's Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar neighborhood in a working-class family; his father built a home gym and had him training from a young age. At Pittsburgh, Donald became one of the most dominant defenders in college football, posting a career-high 28.5 tackles for loss as a senior and sweeping the Bronko Nagurski, Outland, Chuck Bednarik, and Lombardi awards as the nation's top defender.
The St. Louis Rams selected Donald 13th overall in 2014, and he was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in his first season. Starting in 2015, he put together an extraordinary run — eight first-team All-Pro selections in nine years (missing only 2022) — and in 2018 he set the single-season sack record for a defensive tackle with 20.5.
Donald won Defensive Player of the Year three times (2017, 2018, 2020), at the time tying Lawrence Taylor and J.J. Watt as the only players to win it in back-to-back seasons twice. In February 2022 he won his only Super Bowl (LVI), sealing the victory over the Bengals with a game-ending pressure on Joe Burrow on 4th down.
Donald finished his career with 111 sacks and 543 tackles in 154 games, announcing his retirement in March 2024. In November 2025, Pittsburgh retired his jersey number, and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in January 2026. He's widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive players ever to play the game.
