Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.
A dominant junior college scoring record and a national championship at UNLV made Larry Johnson the consensus top prospect in the country — and the Charlotte Hornets used the 1st overall pick to make him their franchise cornerstone. Born March 14, 1969, in Tyler, Texas. Height 6 ft 7 in (201 cm).
After two record-setting seasons at Odessa Junior College, he transferred to UNLV (1989–1991), winning the 1990 NCAA championship and national player of the year honors in 1991. Drafted 1st overall by the Charlotte Hornets in 1991, he won Rookie of the Year and became the franchise's first All-Star in 1993.
Nicknamed "Grandmama" for a popular sneaker-commercial persona, Johnson was a two-time NBA All-Star. Traded to the New York Knicks in 1996, he helped lead the team to the 1999 NBA Finals, memorably hitting a game-tying four-point play in that year's playoffs.
Career totals: 11,450 points (16.2 ppg), 5,300 rebounds (7.5 rpg), 2,298 assists (3.3 apg) over 707 games and 10 seasons — a back injury shortened what began as an MVP-caliber start to his career.
He won an Olympic bronze medal with Team USA's "Dream Team II" in 1994.
