Connie Hawkins — ABA champion and MVP, 4× NBA All-Star, "The Hawk." Career stats, bio and legacy of a playground legend unjustly kept out of his sport's prime years.
Connie Hawkins biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.
Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.
Wrongly implicated in a college point-shaving scandal as a freshman, Connie Hawkins spent years exiled to obscure leagues and the Harlem Globetrotters before the NBA finally let him play — by which point some of his physical prime was already behind him. Born July 17, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York. Died October 6, 2017, in Phoenix, Arizona, at age 75. Height 6 ft 8 in (203 cm).
A New York City playground legend nicknamed "The Hawk," he won MVP of the short-lived American Basketball League in 1962 before four years with the Globetrotters. He joined the ABA's Pittsburgh/Minnesota Pipers in 1967, winning the ABA championship and MVP award in 1968. After a lawsuit forced the NBA to admit him, he joined the Phoenix Suns in 1969, later playing for the Los Angeles Lakers and Atlanta Hawks.
A four-time NBA All-Star, Hawkins made the All-NBA First Team in 1970, celebrated for above-the-rim, playground-honed athleticism that predated the modern high-flying wing.
Combined ABA and NBA career totals: 11,528 points (18.7 ppg), 5,450 rebounds (8.8 rpg), 2,556 assists (4.1 apg).
His No. 42 was retired by the Phoenix Suns. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992, an acknowledgment of talent the league had denied fans the chance to see in its prime.
