A single healthy season is all it took for Bill Walton to be compared to Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Bill Russell — the tragedy of his career is how rarely that health lasted. Born November 5, 1952, in La Mesa, California. Died May 27, 2024, in San Diego, California, at age 71. Height 6 ft 11 in (211 cm).
Under John Wooden at UCLA (1971–1974), he won two NCAA championships and was named national college player of the year three consecutive years, including a legendary 21-of-22 shooting performance in the 1973 title game. Drafted 1st overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1974, he led the team to its first NBA championship in 1977, winning Finals MVP, and captured the regular-season MVP award in 1978. Chronic foot injuries derailed the rest of his Portland tenure; he later found a second act as the Sixth Man of the Year on the 1986 champion Boston Celtics.
A two-time NBA All-Star, Walton is widely regarded as one of the best passing big men in basketball history.
Career totals: 6,215 points (13.3 ppg), 4,923 rebounds (10.5 rpg), 1,590 assists (3.4 apg) over 468 games and 10 seasons.
His No. 32 was retired by the Trail Blazers and UCLA. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. He went on to a long, colorful career as a broadcaster.
