01Biography

Bill Laimbeer biography — NBA career story, legacy, championships, awards and personal background.

Career timeline, milestones, and place among all-time greats.

Booed relentlessly on the road for his physical, needling style of play, Bill Laimbeer was the central figure of the "Bad Boys" Pistons — a team built to make opponents as uncomfortable as possible. Born May 19, 1957, in Boston, Massachusetts. Height 6 ft 11 in (211 cm).

He played at Notre Dame (1975–1979). A 65th overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1979, he spent a season in Italy before joining Cleveland, then was traded to the Detroit Pistons in 1982, where he played the rest of his 14-season career.

A four-time NBA All-Star, Laimbeer led the league in rebounding in 1986 and helped anchor Detroit to back-to-back NBA championships (1989, 1990) alongside Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, and Dennis Rodman.

Career totals: 13,790 points (12.9 ppg), 10,400 rebounds (9.7 rpg), 2,184 assists (2.0 apg) over 1,068 games — he remains the Pistons' all-time leader in career rebounds.

His No. 40 was retired by the Detroit Pistons. He went on to a highly successful WNBA coaching career, winning three championships with the Detroit Shock (2003, 2006, 2008).
